Top Moving Scams
As a consumer seeking moving services always beware of scams and illegal movers. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in the industry that claim to be movers but are not legal movers. Here is a list of some top moving scams.
Phoning It In: Although, surveys are being done more via skype or a video chat of some sort today there are still some situations where it’s definitely more important for an in person estimate to be completed. If a customer only has a couple of bigger pieces being moved and it is local then a phone survey would suffice. But if a customer has a 4 bedroom fully furnished home that needs packing an in home estimate is ideal.
The Cursory Glance: An estimator should always take their time to go through every nook and cranny while doing an estimate for moving. An “estimator” that only glances at everything and does not take the time to look through cabinets or under beds is probably not the most accurate. And an inaccurate estimate could result in a higher cost for moving.
Deposits: On a local move it is typical for our company to ask for a small deposit up front to secure your spot on the schedule. Typically that is the travel fee. A mover that requests a large amount or all up front is not trustworthy and could switch up the cost on you towards the end of your move. Be aware of those trying to scam you out of money.
The “Guaranteed” Quote: Federal law requires one of two kinds of moving contracts. A non-binding estimate means the company cannot require payment of more than 10 percent above the original estimate, due within 30 days of delivery. A binding estimate is supposed to be a guaranteed price for the move and all extras and services. If additional services are requested (such as unpacking), the extra fee is due within 30 days of delivery. Always read the fine print on an estimate and ask questions.
The Blank Contract: Read a contract from top to bottom and never sign a blank contract. Get everything in writing including extra surcharges, your moving dates, and proof of a deposit (if one is required).
