Top Moving Scams

  • As a consumer seeking moving services always beware of scams and illegal movers. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in the industry that claim to be movers but are not legal movers. Here is a list of some top moving scams. Phoning It In: Although, surveys are being done more via skype or a video chat of some sort today there are still some situations where it’s definitely more important for an in person estimate to be completed. If a customer only has a couple of bigger pieces being moved and it is local then a phone survey would suffice. But if a customer has a 4 bedroom fully furnished home that needs packing an in home estimate is ideal. The Cursory Glance: An estimator should always take their time to go through every nook and cranny while doing an estimate for moving. An “estimator” that only glances at everything and does not take the time to look through cabinets or under beds is probably not the most accurate. And an inaccurate estimate could result in a higher cost for moving. Deposits: On a local move it is typical for our company to ask for a small deposit up front to secure your spot on the schedule. Typically that is the travel fee. A mover that requests a large amount or all up front is not trustworthy and could switch up the cost on you towards the end of your move. Be aware of those trying to scam you out of money. The “Guaranteed” Quote: Federal law requires one of two kinds of moving contracts. A non-binding estimate means the company cannot require payment of more than 10 percent above the original estimate, due within 30 days of delivery. A binding estimate is supposed to be a guaranteed price for the move and all extras and services. If additional services are requested (such as unpacking), the extra fee is due within 30 days of delivery. Always read the fine print on an estimate and ask questions. The Blank Contract: Read a contract from top to bottom and never sign a blank contract. Get everything in writing including extra surcharges, your moving dates, and proof of a deposit (if one is required). At A+ Moving and Storage we are honest and transparent. If you have a question after you’ve received your estimate, just ask. We are always here to help in any way possible and want to make your move as stress free as possible.

  • We all love Fayetteville, NC, but in a military town we realize that moving is common and moving cross-country happens. A long distance move can be stressful, and long car rides with kids isn’t easy. Here are some tips for traveling long distance with children and keeping everyone happy along the way. Snacks for the Road Not only the kids get hungry. While A+ Moving and Storage takes care of your move – you’ll have plenty of car space to fit a cooler packed full of delicious treats. If your time is limited just pack some easy trail mix – something delicious that keeps you full. Entertainment Keep things fun! Depending on ages – books, audiobooks, movies, tablets etc. can all help make a long car ride seem shorter! Don’t forget the charger! Toys and coloring books can help to keep toddlers occupied as well. Be sure to encourage your kids to bring their favorite stuffed animal along for the ride. Even blankets and pillows in the back seat can make the road trip seem more fun! Drive through the Night For you night owl parents – wait until it’s the kids bedtime and drive through the night. Beat traffic and get a large portion of the trip completed with sleepy/stress-free youngsters! Take an afternoon nap prior to leaving and be sure you are well rested and prepared with plenty of water and your own snacks to keep you alert and driving safely.   Moving with kids doesn’t have to be a nightmare if you take the right steps to prepare! A+ Moving and Storage will be sure to take care of your move and you just worry about you and your family!

  • Mistake 1: Not Knowing the Type of Moving Vehicle. Make sure to contact your moving company and ask what type of moving vehicle they will be using. Moving Companies may use anything from trailers to 18-wheelers and you won’t know until you ask. A+ Moving and Storage uses  18-wheelers so that you have an abundance of room for your large or small move. Call us for dimensions! Mistake 2: Not Thinking About Where the Moving Truck Will Park. Now that you know the moving company’s vehicle type, make sure that you think ahead of where the truck will be parking when loading or unloading. Parking can be tight at apartment complexes or in large cities. Make sure to plan ahead so that it doesn’t cause a headache on your moving day. Mistake 3: Not Giving the Movers Unloading Directions. Our movers at A+ Moving and Storage are expert unloaders, but you’re the boss on moving day. As with any moving company, it’s best to let movers know how you want things arranged in the unit before unloading begins. Need us to move something around once places? Speak up! This step may take some extra thought and planning prior to your move. Make sure to make a list or even a layout to give to your movers to make the day go smoothly! Mistake 4: Not Knowing How Much Space You Need for Your Things.  When it comes to storage space, it can be difficult to guess exactly how much space you need. If your belongings already are organized and boxed up, this is easier to determine. But when in doubt, get advice from the A+ Moving and Storage! Mistake 5: Visiting the Storage Facility When Everyone Else Is There. It is typical to move in or out of a storage unit on the weekends or after 5 during the work week. Think about scheduling a visit or move during work hours Monday-Friday to reduce wait!   Call A+ Moving and Storage for more moving and storage tips! We do free estimates!
